Despite Gsat-6A jolt, Isro gears up for navigation sat launch on April 12.

• Isro chairman Dr K Sivan told TOI that the "upcoming launches like of IRNSS-1I will not be affected because of the snapping of signal link with communication satellite Gsat-6A".
• IRNSS-1I, which will be launched by PSLV-C41 rocket from Sriharikota on April 12, will replace faulty IRNSS-1A navigation satellite, whose three Rubidium atomic clocks had stopped working 2 years ago.

Despite snapping of the communication link with its recently launched communication satellite Gsat-6A, Isro is gearing up for the scheduled launch of its next navigation satellite IRNSS-1I on April 12.
Isro chairman Dr K Sivan told TOI that the "upcoming launches like of IRNSS-1I will not be affected because of the snapping of signal link with communication satellite Gsat-6A". While one team of Isro is busy with re-establishing the contact with Gsat-6A, the second team is busy in preparations for the launch of the navigation satellite, says a source in Isro.
IRNSS-1I, which will be launched by PSLV-C41 rocket from Sriharikota on April 12, will replace faulty IRNSS-1A navigation satellite, whose three Rubidium atomic clocks (meant to measure precise location data) had stopped working two years ago. IRNSS-1I weighing 600kg (dry mass) and a life span of 10 years will become the eighth satellite to join the constellation of navigation satellites called NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) or popularly known as IRNSS.
The seven-satellite indigenous navigation system is a smaller version of the American GPS, which with 31 satellites has global reach. The 'desi' GPS is designed to provide accurate position information service to users in India as well as the region extending up to 1,500 km from its boundary.
On August 31 last year, Isro tried to launch IRNSS-1H to replace faulty IRNSS-1A but the navigation satellite got stuck in the heat shield of the PSLV rocket during the launch. The satellite, still stuck in the heat shield and now declared space debris, is wandering in the near-earth orbit and will ultimately fall to the Earth.
On Gsat-6A, the space agency said efforts were on to resume communication with the satellite. Sources said there was no indication of any system malfunction or fluctuations during or after launch. (Source: The Times of India)

Isro’s GSAT-6A communication satellite to be launched tomorrow, countdown begins.

A key feature of Isro’s GSAT-6A communication satellite is to provide mobile communication to India through multi beam coverage facility.

The 27-hour countdown began on Wednesday for the launch of Isro’s GSLV-F08 mission carrying the GSAT-6A communication satellite from the space port of Sriharikota, about 110 kms from Chennai.
The countdown for the mission to be launched tomorrow started at 13.56 hours following clearance from the Mission Readiness Review committee and Launch Authorisation Board, Isro said.
The Launch of GSLV-F08, planned from the Second Launch Pad in Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota at 16.56 hours tomorrow marks the 12th flight of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle GSLV-F08 and sixth flight with indigenous Cryogenic upper stage.
GSAT-6A, is similar to GSAT-6, a high power S-band communication satellite built on I-2K satellite bus with a mission life of about ten years, it said.
A key feature of the satellite is providing mobile communication to India through multi beam coverage facility. The satellite will also provide a platform for developing technologies such as demonstration of 6 m S-Band Unfurlable Antenna, handheld ground terminals and network management techniques that could be useful in satellite based mobile communication applications.
GSLV-F08, weighing 415.6 tonnes with a height of 49.1 metre comes with notable improvements like induction of High Thrust Vikas Engine, electromechanical actuation system in place of electro-hydraulic actuation system. (Source: Livemint)

Isro to launch GSAT-6A on Mar 29, transfer Lithium-Ion Cell tech to BHEL

Isro's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre has developed the technology to produce space grade Li-ion cell and demonstrated its performance under various testing conditions.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has entered into a technology transfer agreement (TTA) with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) under which it will pass on the technology for the manufacture of space grade Li-Ion cells.
The TTA was signed at Isro Headquarters in Bengaluru on March 22 in the presence of Isro Chairman K Sivan and BHEL Chairman & Managing Director Atul Sobti.Isro uses Li-Ion batteries as a power source for satellite to launch vehicle applications due to their high energy density, reliability and long cycle life.
Isro’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram has successfully developed the technology to produce space grade Li-ion cell and demonstrated the performance of the cell under various testing conditions, establishing its cycle life characteristics in an accelerated mode. These cells are currently being used for various satellite and launch vehicle applications.This Li-ion cell technology transfer will enable BHEL to produce space grade Li-Ion cells to help meet the country’s space programme requirements.
This technology can also be adopted to cater to the Li-Ion cell requirement for other national needs.
GSAT-6A launch on March 29
Isro is gearing up to launch the GSAT-6A, a high-power S-band communication satellite on March 29.The satellite, with a life span of around 10 years, will be put into orbit by Indian rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F08), said Isro.
The rocket is expected to take off from the second launch pad at Sriharikota rocket port in Andhra Pradesh at 4.56 p.m on March 29.Isro said the GSAT-6A satellite was similar to GSAT-6.
The satellite would provide a platform for developing technologies like demonstration of 6m S-Band Unfurlable Antenna, handheld ground terminals and network management techniques. These are useful in satellite-based mobile communication applications.GSAT-6A would be followed by the launch of navigation satellite next financial year.In the Union Budget for 2018-19, the Department of Space has been tasked with preparing three earth observation spacecraft ready for launch; four Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) flights, besides one GSLV MkII and Mk III each.
