Nuclear capable Prithvi-2 missile successfully testfired at night.

India successfully testfired on Wednesday night its indigenously developed nuclear capable surface-to-surface Prithvi-2 missile as part of a user trial by the Army from a test range off Odisha coast, an official of the ITR said.

"Two Prithvi-2 missiles were test fired consecutively and both tests met all parameters," the official said from the Interim Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur.
The trial of the missile, which has a strike range of 350 km, was carried out from a mobile launcher from launch complex-3 of the ITR between 7 pm to 7.15 pm, he said.
It was a routine trial, he said adding "The missile trajectory was tracked by radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations by the DRDO along the coast of Odisha".
The missile was randomly chosen from the production stock and the entire launch activity was carried out by Strategic Force Command (SFC) of the Army and monitored by scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of the training exercise, official sources said.
The downrange teams on board a ship deployed near the designated impact point in the Bay of Bengal monitored the terminal events and splashdown.
The last night time testfire of Prithvi-2 was conducted successfully from the ITR on February 21, 2018. Two missiles were successfully test fired in quick succession from the same base in salvo mode on November 21, 2016, they said.
Prithvi-2 is capable of carrying 500-1,000 kg of warheads and is powered by liquid propulsion twin engines, the sources said.
The state-of-the-art missile uses advanced inertial guidance system with maneuvering trajectory to hit its target, they said.
Already inducted into the armory of Indian defence forces in 2003, nine-metre tall 'Prithvi' was the first missile to have been developed by DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). (Source: defencenews.in)

India warns of inherent dangers in nuclear brinkmanship pursued by nations - Pragnya IAS Academy - News Analysis.

India warns of inherent dangers in nuclear brinkmanship pursued by nations.

A few days back, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan delivered his maiden speech at the UN General Debate and drummed up hysteria over nuclear war

India has warned of the inherent dangers in nuclear brinkmanship pursued by countries as a cover for cross-border terrorism, days after Pakistan Prime Minister drummed up hysteria over a possible nuclear war in South Asia after New Delhi revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
Noting that the global security situation is in a flux, Ambassador Pankaj Sharma, Permanent Representative of India to the Conference on Disarmament (CD), said that as a responsible nuclear power, India's nuclear doctrine continues to stress a policy of credible minimum deterrence with a posture of no-first use and non-use against non-nuclear weapon states.
He made the comments on Monday at the General Debate of the First Committee, which deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community.
The global security situation is in a flux. There is concern over the demise of some of the landmark disarmament treaties and agreements and the lowering of the nuclear threshold and the inherent dangers in nuclear brinkmanship, pursued by countries as a cover for cross-border terrorism, he said.
Sharma's comments came days after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan delivered his maiden speech at the UN General Debate and in his almost 50-minute address, devoted half of his time to India and Kashmir, drumming up hysteria over nuclear war.
In a strong reply, India had said Khan's "threat of unleashing nuclear devastation qualifies as brinkmanship, not statesmanship.
Pakistan has been trying to internationalise the Kashmir issue after India withdrew the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, but New Delhi has asserted the abrogation of Article 370 was its "internal matter" and has asked Islamabad to accept the reality.
India has also said that there is no scope for any third party mediation on the Kashmir issue.
Sharma asserted that the disarmament machinery has not lived up to expectations, as evident in the deadlock in the CD for over two decades and the inability of United Nations Disarmament Commission to hold its substantive session this year.
Yet, there is hope and optimism due to our underlying belief in the value of dialogue and cooperation, he added.
The Conference on Disarmament had failed in its efforts throughout the year to adopt a Programme of Work, he said, adding that this was the result of the lack of political will and "fissiparous tendencies and could not be attributed to any shortcomings in the rules of procedure.
We need to preserve the CD as the sole disarmament negotiating forum and get back to substantive work as per its mandate. India stands ready to work with fellow members on all the core items on CD's agenda, Sharma said, underscoring India's commitment to the goal of universal, non-discriminatory and verifiable nuclear disarmament.
New Delhi has also called for complete elimination of nuclear weapons through a step by step process, as outlined in the Working Paper on Nuclear Disarmament submitted to the UN General Assembly in 2006.
He said India would like to reiterate its call to undertake the steps outlined in the Working Paper, including negotiation in the CD of a Comprehensive Nuclear Weapons Convention.
As in previous years, India will be tabling four draft resolutions; namely Convention on the Prohibition of the Use of Nuclear Weapons', Reducing Nuclear Danger', Measures to Prevent Terrorists from Acquiring Weapons of Mass Destruction' and Role of Science and Technology in the context of International Security and Disarmament'.
Sharma noted that without diminishing the priority India attaches to disarmament, New Delhi supports the immediate commencement of negotiations in the CD of a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT).
He also stressed the importance of full and effective implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, especially in view of the tragic instances of use of chemical weapons in various parts of the world in the recent years.
India attaches immense importance to the Convention and supports the strengthening of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to enable it to fulfill its mandate. (Source: The business standard)

Russia suspends nuclear arms treaty after US says to pull out - Pragnya IAS Academy - News Analysis.

Russia suspends nuclear arms treaty after US says to pull out.

• US said it will withdraw from INF treaty in six months unless Moscow ends violations of 1987 pact
• 'US has declared that they suspend their participation in the deal, we suspend it as well,' Putin said
Russia has suspended the Cold War-era Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty, President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday, after the United States announced it would withdraw from the arms control pact, accusing Moscow of violations.
Moscow's relations with the West are strained over issues including Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, allegations of meddling in the US presidential election and being behind a nerve agent attack in Britain.

The United States announced on Friday it will withdraw from the INF treaty in six months unless Moscow ends what it says are violations of the 1987 pact.
It would reconsider its withdrawal if Russia came into compliance with the agreement, which bans both nations from stationing short- and intermediate-range land-based missiles in Europe. Russia denies violating the treaty.
On Saturday, Washington said it had formally notified Russia and other treaty parties of the United States' intent and suspended its obligations under the INF.
"The American partners have declared that they suspend their participation in the deal, we suspend it as well," Putin said during a televised meeting with foreign and defence ministers.
Putin said Russia will start work on creating new missiles, including hypersonic ones, and told ministers not to initiate disarmament talks with Washington, accusing the United States of being slow to respond to such moves.
"We have repeatedly, during a number of years, and constantly raised a question about substantiative talks on the disarmament issue," Putin said. "We see that in the past few years the partners have not supported our initiatives."
The row over the treaty has drawn a strong reaction from Europe and China.
European nations fear the treaty's collapse could lead to a new arms race with possibly a new generation of US nuclear missiles stationed on the continent.
China urged the United States on Saturday to resolve its differences with Russia through dialogue.
During the meeting with Putin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the United States of violating the INF and other arms deals, including the non-proliferation treaty.
Putin said Russia would not deploy its weapons in Europe and other regions unless the United States did so.
The U.S. State Department said in a statement on Saturday that the United States could not be restricted by the treaty while Russia violated it.
"The United States has concluded that extraordinary events related to the subject matter of the Treaty arising from Russia's continued noncompliance have jeopardized the United States' supreme interests," the statement said.

ias-coaching-centres-bangalore-hyderabad-pragnya-ias-academy-current-affairs-nuclear-capable-successfully
Describing the trial as a "complete success", they said all mission objectives were met during the test-fire. All radars, tracking systems and range stations tracked and monitored the flight performance of the missile, which was launched with support of a mobile launcher.
Radars and electro-optical systems had been positioned along the coast of Odisha for tracking and monitoring all parameters of the missile, the sources said, adding two naval ships were anchored near the target area to witness the final event.
This was the 7th trial of Agni-IV missile. The last trial conducted by the strategic force command (SFC) of the Indian Army from the same base on January 2, 2018 was successful.
The indigenously developed sophisticated Agni-IV having 4,000 km strike range is a two-stage missile. It is 20 meter long with a weight of 17 tonnes, they said.
"The state-of-the-art missile is equipped with modern and compact avionics to provide high level of reliability and precision," Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) sources said.
Agni-IV missile is equipped with advanced Avionics, 5th generation On Board Computer and distributed architecture. It has the latest features to correct and guide itself for in -flight disturbances, they said.
The accurate Ring Laser Gyro-based Inertial Navigation System (RINS), supported by highly reliable redundant Micro Navigation System (MINGS), ensures the vehicle reaches the target with accuracy.
The re-entry heat shield can withstand temperatures in the range of 4000 degrees centigrade and makes sure avionics function normally with inside temperature remaining less than 50 degrees centigrade.
Ballistic missiles like Agni-I, II and III and Prithvi have been included in the arsenal of the armed forces, giving India an effective deterrence capability. (Source: India today)
