Earth heading towards irreversible ‘hothouse’ state: Study.

A team of scientists showed that even if the carbon emission reductions called for in the Paris Agreement are met, there is a risk of Earth entering what the scientists call "Hothouse Earth" conditions.

Our planet is at the risk of entering an irreversible ‘hothouse’ condition – where the global temperatures will rise by four to five degrees and sea levels may surge by up to 60 metres higher than today – even if targets under the Paris climate deal are met, a study warns. According to the researchers, keeping global warming to within 1.5-2 degrees Celsius may be more difficult than previously assessed.
“Human emissions of greenhouse gas are not the sole determinant of temperature on Earth,” said Will Steffen from the Australian National University. “Our study suggests that human-induced global warming of two degrees Celsius may trigger other Earth system processes, often called “feedbacks,” that can drive further warming – even if we stop emitting greenhouse gases,” said Steffen, lead author of the study published in the journal PNAS. “Avoiding this scenario requires a redirection of human actions from exploitation to stewardship of the Earth system,” he said.
A team of scientists showed that even if the carbon emission reductions called for in the Paris Agreement are met, there is a risk of Earth entering what the scientists call “Hothouse Earth” conditions. A “Hothouse Earth” climate will in the long-term stabilise at a global average of 4-5 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial temperatures with sea level 10-60 metres higher than today, according to the study. Currently, global average temperatures are just over 1 degree Celsius above pre-industrial and rising at 0.17 degree Celsius per decade.
The study consider ten natural feedback processes, some of which are “tipping elements” that lead to abrupt change if a critical threshold is crossed. These feedbacks could turn from being a “friend” that stores carbon to a “foe” that emits it uncontrollably in a warmer world. These feedbacks include permafrost thaw, loss of methane hydrates from the ocean floor, weakening land and ocean carbon sinks, increasing bacterial respiration in the oceans, Amazon rainforest dieback, boreal forest dieback, reduction of northern hemisphere snow cover, loss of Arctic summer sea ice, and reduction of Antarctic sea ice and polar ice sheets.
“These tipping elements can potentially act like a row of dominoes. Once one is pushed over, it pushes Earth towards another. It may be very difficult or impossible to stop the whole row of dominoes from tumbling over,” said Johan Rockstrom, Executive Director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre in Sweden. “Places on Earth will become uninhabitable if “Hothouse Earth” becomes the reality,” Rockstrom said. “We show how industrial-age greenhouse gas emissions force our climate, and ultimately the Earth system, out of balance,” said Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany.
“In particular, we address tipping elements in the planetary machinery that might, once a certain stress level has been passed, one by one change fundamentally, rapidly, and perhaps irreversibly. This cascade of events may tip the entire Earth system into a new mode of operation,” Joachim said.
Maximising the chances of avoiding a “Hothouse Earth” requires not only reduction of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions but also enhancement and creation of new biological carbon stores through improved forest, agricultural and soil management, and technologies that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it underground, researchers said. India's population growth rate highly overestimated: Study.

India's population growth rate is highly overestimated by existing models, say scientists who suggest that accounting for the diversity and differences in the levels of education among people can help arrive at more accurate projections.

Accurate population projections could help India and its workforce catch up to more developed Asian countries with higher GDP per capita, researchers suggest.
"India is an extremely heterogeneous sub-continent. Simply because it is one nation, unlike composite Europe, it should not be treated as a uniform entity," said Wolfgang Lutz, the World Population programme director at International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria.
"The forecasts for India over the coming decades strongly depend on which sources of heterogeneity are explicitly included in the model," said Lutz.
By 2025, India is expected to surpass China as the world's most populous country due to higher fertility rates and a younger population.
However, India's population outlook depends heavily on the degree to which differences between regions within its population, or heterogeneity, are incorporated into population projection models.
To account for the diversity between different areas of India, researchers designed a study that pioneered a five-dimensional model of India's population differences that include rural or urban place of residence, state, age, sex, and level of education.
The model was then used to show the population projection changes within scenarios that combine different levels of these factors.
For example, a much higher population projection results from a model that combines data from individual states as compared to the overall national projection, since states with higher fertility rates eventually add up to a higher national population projection. If the projection is carried out while only explicitly accounting for age and sex, influential factors like higher education, associated with decreased fertility, are left out. Thus, a projection based on today's much higher fertility rate of uneducated and rural women predicts a drastically larger population in the future.
Since education level across all of India has increased over time, and is associated with a lower fertility rate, the same projection may predict a drastically smaller population when accounting for education and increasing urbanisation.
Combining both effects, the influence of education appears to dominate, resulting in a lower population projection.
Depending on the dimensions considered, when fertility, mortality, education and migration rates are frozen at the 2011 levels, stratification by education, states, or residence can result in population projections that span a huge range from 1.6 to 3.1 billion.
Where these rates change according to plausible model predictions, the population peaks between 1.65 to around 1.8 billion.

Environmental changes may cut global vegetable yield by 35%: Study.

Environmental changes such as increasing ambient temperature, ozone concentrations and decreasing water availability would decrease yields of leafy vegetables and legume, says a study.

Predicted environmental changes are likely to reduce average yields of vegetables by at least 35% globally, according to new research that highlights the need for the agriculture sector to build resilience to climate change.
Environmental changes such as increasing ambient temperature, ozone concentrations, water salinity and decreasing water availability that are predicted to occur by the mid- to end-century would decrease yields of leafy vegetables and legume, said the study which has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the official journal of the National Academy of Sciences, USA.
If no action is taken, these changes could reduce average yields of vegetables by 35% and legumes by 9%, said the study, which involved systematic review of all available published evidence from experimental studies on impact of environmental changes on yield of vegetables and legumes.
It would also cancel out the potential increase in yield due to increase in carbon-dioxide levels, according to the study that included 174 research papers, reporting 1,540 experiments conducted in 40 countries, mainly in southern Europe, North America and South Asia during 1975 to 2016.
Previous research has shown a reduction in yield of staple crops such as rice and wheat because of changes in temperature, rainfall, but impacts on vegetables was largely unknown, the study says.
“We brought together all available published evidence on the impact of environmental change on yields of vegetables for the first time and conducted meta-analyses wherever possible,” said co-author, Professor Alan Dangour from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, which led the study.
“Urgent action needs to be taken to support the agriculture sector to increase resilience to environmental changes. It must be a priority for governments across the world,” said Dangour, highlighting the need for developing new crop varieties and enhancing agricultural management. (Source: Livemint)

8 out of 10 people concerned about Aadhaar data privacy: Study.

8 out of 10 people are concerned about their Aadhaar data security and feel that the government should intervene for online data protection, a Velocity MR survey showed.

Following the Facebook data scandal perpetrated by Cambridge Analytica, 80% Indians are concerned about their Aadhaar data privacy, a study by market research and analysis company Velocity MR.
The Velocity MR study, in which 5,800 respondents participated, shows 8 out of 10 people are concerned about their Aadhaar data security and feel that the government should intervene for online data protection.
“Every netizen is leaving a trail of digital footprints with everything that they click online. From personal information, to financial data, to biometric details, all this data is accessible in some form or the other on various foreign servers that one cannot fathom,” Velocity MR CEO Jasal Shah said.
“With the new European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regime coming into play, it is a wake-up call for internet companies to tighten their security policies with immediate effect,” he added.
Europe has introduced the GDPR regime that all tech companies have to adhere to. The Facebook data scandal has created awareness like never before on issues around data privacy, user rights and consent policies, nudging tech companies to review and strengthen their data protection rules.
According to Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) chairperson J. Satyanarayana, more than 121 crore Indians have been enrolled for Aadhaar and it has been used for over 19 billion authentications so far.
The Velocity MR study, which covered Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Pune, also noted that 4 in every 10 respondents said their opinion about Facebook has gone down in recent months.
One in three respondents said that they would share lesser on Facebook, even though they will continue to be on Facebook, the study said.
Moreover, even though people believe that social media sites are not completely safe for financial transactions, they have not completely stopped using it either. The higher age group of 46-60 years is more willing to continue using Facebook as before, the study noted. (Source: Livemint)

India’s antibiotics consumption shot up by 103% since 2000: study.

India had the largest increase in antibiotic consumption in low and middle income countries and also surpassed America’s antibiotic consumption rate for oxazolidinones, a last resort class.

India’s antibiotics consumption has increased by 103 per cent from 2000 to 2015, the highest in low and middle-income countries, according to a new study. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study tracked antibiotic consumption in 76 countries and also projected total global antibiotic consumption through 2030.
In fact, increase in global consumption of antibiotics (65 per cent), the cause of growing antibiotic resistance, was led by consumption surge in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The average amount of antibiotics consumed by 1,000 inhabitants in India every day also increased 63 per cent between 2000 and 2015.
Compared to this, antibiotic consumption increased by 65 per cent and the consumption rate per 1,000 inhabitants increased 39 per cent globally.

China and Pakistan were the leading LMIC consuming antibiotics, witnessing a rise of 79 per cent and 65 per cent, respectively.
The antibiotic consumption rate of broad-spectrum penicillins, the most commonly consumed class of antibiotics, increased 36 per cent between 2000 and 2015 globally. The greatest increase was in LMICs (56 per cent). In fact, India surpassed the United States' antibiotic consumption rate for oxazolidinones in 2012 to become the highest consumer, says the study. Oxazolidinones are newer and last-resort antibiotics.
